How Pregnancy Can Affect Your Libido

Pregnancy is one of the most rewarding experiences in the life of a woman but, can also be a trying and difficult phase. Numerous changes occur within the body during the course of pregnancy due to alteration in the level of hormones. Expectant women especially first timers are confused as they fail to understand these changes and the methods to deal with them.

Pregnancy causes a change in libido. Some pregnant women experience a loss of libido while others observe a sudden surge. Here we shall discuss the relationship between pregnancy and libido.

Understanding libido

Libido is described as a person’s natural desire to have sex or get physically intimate. It is also referred to as sex drive.  Hormones and the supply of blood to the pelvis region determine the libido levels.  In addition to this, factors such as physical health, wellness and self esteem also influence libido or the sex drive of a person. The fluctuating libido during the nine months of pregnancy is a normal phenomenon and to-be-mothers have no need to worry about it. The variation in the libido is different for different women and varies with every pregnancy.

Loss of libido during pregnancy

Loss of libido is generally observed during the first and third trimester of pregnancy.  The symptoms of pregnancy are dominant during the first trimester. Women feel nauseous, battle sleep sickness and backaches during the first trimester. Women feel tired, stressed out and at times even become irritable.  All these factors result in loss of libido during pregnancy.

Some women are not ready to get physically intimate because of the fear that it will cause harm to the baby. Many women also experience mood swings during pregnancy. Women also find it hard to cope with physical changes such as weight gain and find it awkward, uncomfortable and difficult to have sex. Thus body image discourages women from having sex and lowers libido.

What causes an increase in libido during pregnancy?

While making love seems to be the last thing on the mind of some pregnant women, some experience a surge in the libido especially during the months after the first trimester. This is due to the changes in the hormone levels during pregnancy. Progesterone and estrogen are the hormones that control libido. During pregnancy, the proportions of these two hormones increase in the blood stream to support the pregnancy.  The increased hormones cause several changes such as increased blood flow to the pelvic region, increased vaginal lubrication and sensitive breasts and nipples. These factors increase the sex drive and make a woman want to spend more time in bed with their partners.

Dealing with the libido issue

Women should not battle the libido issue alone. The best way to deal with the rise and fall in libido is communicating effectively with your partner especially in case of the latter. Let your partner know exactly how you feel.  Share your concerns with a doctor who at this time is the best advice for you. Women who experience an increase in libido may want to have sex during pregnancy.  You should consult your doctor about it. Besides, there are several other ways you can get intimate with your partner besides making love. Thus education and effective communication will help you deal with the Libido issue.
